Steve Slater, Ph.D.
Steve Slater is the Conservation Science Director at HawkWatch International, where he has worked since 2006. Steve works with other non-profits, state and federal agencies, and industry partners to address issues relevant to birds of prey and our shared environment. Much of his work revolves around threats to the iconic Golden Eagle, including habitat loss, disturbance, and human-caused mortality. He facilitates the Utah Eagle Working Group and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Raptor Research. Steve moved west after graduating from Michigan State University to attend graduate school at the University of Wyoming, where he received his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees studying bird community dynamics and greater sage-grouse. Steve is passionate about spending time outside to make his soul happy, including birding, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, and camping. He is married to a wonderful elementary teacher and is father to three boys who share his enjoyment of the outdoors.
