Volunteer Highlight: Dax Jeffs

We are beyond grateful to the volunteers who show up day after day to make a positive impact for the wildlife and lands that unite us.

This month, we’re thrilled to recognize Dax Jeffs, one of our Riverscape Restoration volunteers who joined us for several volunteer days at our restoration site along the South Fork of Chalk Creek near Coalville, Utah. Sageland staff were grateful for Dax’s passion and beaver-like eagerness to build throughout these restoration days.

Get to know our September Volunteer of the Month, Dax Jeffs, in our interview below!

What is your background in? Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I don't have any professional higher education, but I do have an extreme passion for learning about the natural world and do my best to learn what I can on my own and from those with the knowledge and willingness to teach.

What do you love most about volunteering? What keeps you coming back?

While this was my first time volunteering, I absolutely loved it. It shows people's willingness to work for the betterment of the world we all share without any incentive other than doing good. If I could afford it I'd volunteer every extra second I have to make our world a better place.

How do you feel about wildlife and places in the West? Is there anything special about beaver dam analogs or riparian health that spark you?

I love the nature of the West, I love learning about how diverse our ecosystems are out here and what it takes to take care of them. I especially love rivers, lakes and other riparian habitats because of how important they are–not just to us and the flora and fauna, but to the environment as a whole, and how important it is for us to take care of these special places.

What would you say to others thinking of volunteering?

To those thinking of volunteering–these places that we all love and cherish require our help to take care of them. Our mother earth helps take care of us, we should help take care of her. If everyone did just a little, it adds up to an incredible amount of difference with protecting those places, plants, and animals we love so much.

Thank you to Dax and all of the volunteers who help us make conservation a reality!
