Join Sageland Collaborative to remove barbed wire fencing at Cotton’s Creek to increase safe passage for wildlife like deer and pronghorn!

All ages are welcome, but projects are not suited for children under 10 years old. Volunteers under 18 years old require a guardian’s signature and those under 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

When: Friday, October 17th from 9am-3pm
Where: Cotton’s Creek near Peoa, UT (specific meetup details will be shared in a confirmation email following signup).

The project site is approximately 1h driving from the Salt Lake City area. There is no cell phone service, potable water or restroom facilities at the project site. Pit toilets are available a short drive from the project site in Rockport State Park.

What to expect: We will be removing the bottom line of barbed wire from a section of fencing at Cotton’s Creek to meet wildlife-friendly fencing standards. No prior experience or training is needed. Our team will do a demonstration before breaking the group into teams to tackle different sections of the fence line. This work will involve strenuous hiking up to 2 miles roundtrip over steep terrain, uneven surfaces, and through vegetation. There will be some need for use of hand tools (wire cutters).

Please be aware that we may encounter wildlife that have perished on the fence — volunteers will not be asked to remove wildlife, but this may be a disturbing sight. This is an unfortunate reminder of why we’re doing this work.

What we'll provide:

  • A high-quality, fun, and safe volunteer experience

  • Complimentary lunch, snacks, and cold beverages

  • Extra safety equipment, sun protection, and a first aid kit

  • Opportunities to learn about wildlife while connecting with restoration practitioners and community members

  • Resume-building skills relevant to natural resources careers

What to bring: Bring work gloves, eye protection, water, sun protection, bug spray.

What to wear: You'll need clothing appropriate for the weather conditions - we work in rain or shine! Volunteers must wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe footwear as a safety measure while working with barbed wire.

Attendees are required to fill out Sageland Collaborative’s Volunteer Liability Form & Waiver in order to participate. Minors must have a guardian sign the waiver on their behalf.
