Join Sageland Collaborative, U.S. Forest Service, Utah Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to remove barbed wire fencing at Strawberry Reservoir to increase safe passage for wildlife like deer and pronghorn!

All ages are welcome, but projects are not suited for children under 10 years old. Volunteers under 18 years old require a guardian’s signature and those under 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Volunteers who plan to earn Dedicated Hunter hours through Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) must ALSO sign-up through UDWR's website. Dedicated Hunter volunteers formally fall under UDWRs Dedicated Hunter program.

When: Friday, July 31 from 9am-3pm
Where: Strawberry Reservoir near Heber City, UT (specific meetup details will be shared in a confirmation email following signup).

The project site is approximately 1h 30min driving from the Salt Lake City area. There are vault toilets at a nearby fishing pier but no potable water and limited cell service.

What to expect: This project will consist of taking down and hauling off old fences that no longer serve a purpose. This is to be done by detaching woven wire (sheep) and barbed wire fencing from wooden posts, and hauling all fence materials to the road. No prior experience or training is needed. Our team will do a demonstration before breaking the group into teams to tackle different sections of the fence line. This work will involve hiking off trail over uneven surfaces and through brushy vegetation. There will be some need for use of hand tools (wire cutters).

Please be aware that we may encounter wildlife that have perished on the fence — volunteers will not be asked to remove wildlife, but this may be a disturbing sight. This is an unfortunate reminder of why we’re doing this work.

What we'll provide:

  • A high-quality, fun, and safe volunteer experience

  • Complimentary lunch, snacks, and cold beverages

  • Extra safety equipment, sun protection, and a first aid kit

  • Opportunities to learn about wildlife while connecting with restoration practitioners and community members

  • Resume-building skills relevant to natural resources careers

What to bring: Bring work gloves, eye protection, water, sun protection, bug spray.

What to wear: You'll need clothing appropriate for the weather conditions - we work in rain or shine! Volunteers must wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe footwear as a safety measure while working with barbed wire.

Attendees are required to fill out Sageland Collaborative’s Volunteer Liability Form & Waiver in order to participate. Minors must have a guardian sign the waiver on their behalf.

Reach out to Kelsie LaSharr with any questions or for accommodation requests.
