Dive into Utah's Streams this Fall!

Plus, the premier of our latest shorebird film, a fascinating group of pollinators, volunteers of the month, and more!

If the heat of the summer has you dreaming of cool mountain streams and alpine lakes, we encourage you to join us at one of our upcoming Riverscape Restoration volunteer days!

2024 is set to be our biggest year yet with plans to restore 8 miles of streams with over 500 low-tech restoration structures! This work is only possible with the support of our outstanding community of volunteers and partners.

Will you join us this season to help us reach our ambitious goals for Utah's streams?

Wings in a World on Fire

This weekend, hundreds of volunteers and partners set out to count migratory shorebirds across Utah as part of the Intermountain West Shorebird Survey. The latest Sageland Collaborative film, Wings on a World on Fire, addresses the importance of this region-wide effort to conserve shorebird species and the habitats they rely on.

For more information on our work with shorebirds, visit our project page, and stay tuned for preliminary results from the Fall 2024 survey.

Meet our Summer Volunteers of the Month!

Our busy summer field season provides ample opportunity for the Sageland Community to get involved in wildlife and land conservation. To everyone who has taken the time to join us in the field this summer - thank you! This work would not be possible without the contributions of our volunteers.

Our June & July Volunteers of the Month have truly shown up for wildlife this summer, and we're thrilled to highlight them!

Parker Lloyd

June Volunteer of the Month

Parker has been volunteering with us for the past year, though he's no stranger to the conservation realm! A self-taught Horticulturalist, Parker shows up for wildlife in his role at the Tracy Aviary and as an Artist in Residence at the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust.

Kinsi Peterson

July Volunteer of the Month

Kinsi has spent her summer break getting involved in all things wildlife that Utah has to offer! From joining us on Boreal Toad surveys to supporting our Wildlife Watch team on over nine site visits, Kinsi has poured herself into this work and we could not be more grateful.

Highlighting a Fascinating Group of Pollinators: Cuckoo Bees!

The growing season is in full swing - warm temperatures and long, sunny days - and you can almost guarantee that your garden's flowers will be bustling with a variety of busy bee species gathering nectar and pollen for their offspring. Cuckoo bees, however, defy this conventional archetype — they are cleptoparasites!

In just the last two and a half months, Utah community scientists have submitted more than 90 observations of indiscriminate cuckoo bumble bees around the state. Read our latest blog from Utah Pollinator Pursuit lead Amanda Barth to learn more about these unique pollinators!

Get Involved in Wildlife Conservation

The field season has blown by on a summer breeze, but it's not too late to get involved in our conservation projects! Late summer and fall welcome opportunities to cool off in Utah's streams or to work remotely analyzing photos from our summer Wildlife Watch trail cameras.

Our projects are a great way to learn new skills, meet people, and connect with our local landscapes in a new way.

Board Member Highlight

Join us in welcoming one of our newest board members to the Sageland team, Lily Bosworth!

Lily says, "Sageland’s ability to joyfully bridge conservation and community drew me to join the board. Conservation can be daunting and heavy work, and I believe we have to pursue conservation in community to achieve the landscape-scale change we need, and to keep each other engaged and supported. Sageland fosters connections between people and their places to motivate each of us to stay committed to science-backed conservation."

Staff Recommendation

We're excited to share the Sageland Collaborative Conservation Commute, a series of playlists curated by our staff & summer 2024 interns!

These playlists are full of music, podcast, audiobook, and general recommendations that are sure to set the tone for your daily commute, whether that's to your living room, office, or fieldwork site.
