Parley’s Creek
Pollinator Survey
June 10, 2026
9am—12pm
Join biologists from Sageland Collaborative and Utah’s Rare Insect Conservation Program to survey for pollinators at a restoration site along Parley’s Creek!
Ages 10+ are welcome as our projects are not suited for young children. Volunteers under 18 years old require a guardian’s signature and those under 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
When: Wednesday, June 10, 2026 from 9am—12pm
Where: Parley’s Creek near Salt Lake City, UT (specific meetup details will be shared in a confirmation email following signup).
The project site is approximately a 20 minute drive from the Salt Lake City area. There are no toilets at site, no potable water, and limited cell service. Please plan accordingly before arriving.
What to expect: We will be surveying for pollinators along Parley’s Creek where we have previously conducted riverscape restoration efforts. We will demonstrate how to use the iNaturalist app to log observations before sweeping the area as a group. Surveying will involve hiking off trail over steep and uneven terrain and around the edge of the creek where footing may be slick. We will be taking photos of flowering plants and all pollinating insects that we find. These surveys help us understand how low-tech restoration efforts like beaver dam analogs benefit overall ecosystem health, including that of plants and pollinators.
What we'll provide:
A high-quality, fun, and safe volunteer experience
Complimentary snacks and cold beverages
Extra safety equipment, sun protection, and a first aid kit
Opportunities to learn about wildlife while connecting with restoration practitioners and community members
Resume-building skills relevant to natural resources careers
What to bring: Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, eye protection, and a cell phone or camera to take photos.
What to wear: You'll need clothing appropriate for the weather conditions - we survey in rain or shine! To protect against biting insects, please wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and a hat. Wear close-toed shoes (sneakers you don't mind getting muddy or muck boots.)
