Sparkling Waters, Rich Landscapes, and Thriving Wildlife
Dear Friend,
August was the first time our new stream ecologist, Rose Smith, had been so close to a beaver. “They had an earthy, sweet smell,” she told me, and “intricate scaling on their tails.” She joined our partners at Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to release five beavers at a site being restored with human-made structures.
These beavers will continue the healing work on the stream. They will transform the area into a healthier, more vibrant watershed and create habitat for wildlife.
To me, this is one story that represents what can happen when people like you and me come together in pursuit of a grand, unapologetic goal: the healing of landscapes.
Letting the river do the work: Beaver dam analogs constructed by Sageland Collaborative and partners in 2020 (left) helped the unhealthy stream re-shape during a large storm in 2021 (right). These restoration structures are meant to encourage natural movement of a river, reversing stream degradation and improving habitat for wildlife.
If you’re like me, you feel discouraged at the sight of degraded habitat and wildfire smoke clinging to the hills. But our vision—one of hundreds of donors and volunteers filling the future of the West with sparkling waters and thriving wildlife habitat—is what has kept me going in even the most uncertain times.
Our projects, diverse partnerships, and myriad community supporters work toward this rich future. As we collaborate to improve the health of monarchs, bumblebees, Great Salt Lake, boreal toads, amphibians and reptiles, rosy-finches, Western streams, human communities, and more, we are privileged to have seen all kinds of progress not only this year, but also over our last 25 years of conservation.
Will you join others who love the West to make more work like this possible in 2022? Any gift, from $5 to $5,000, goes a long way for our wildlife and lands.
On behalf of our team at Sageland Collaborative, I want to thank you for being the backbone of conservation in the West. We look forward to another year of landscape-level conservation work with you.
With gratitude,
Joshua Wood
